Early Beginnings
The Essex Agricultural Society hosted the first exhibition in 1818, which later became known as the Topsfield Fair. During the early years, the fair moved between different Essex County locations. The fair was initially quite small, reflecting the primarily agrarian economy of the time and featured displays of livestock, crops, and farming equipment. It was a way for farmers to showcase their best produce, livestock, and innovations in farming techniques, and it provided an opportunity for the exchange of agricultural knowledge. As transportation improved and farming practices evolved, the fair expanded to include more diverse events, including horse-pulling contests, livestock competitions, and exhibits of modern agricultural machinery.
Topsfield Becomes Home
In 1910 the fair found a permanent home in Topsfield on the Treadwell Farm land that was given to the Essex Agricultural Society in 1858. The Topsfield Fair has grown into a large-scale event that still celebrates agriculture, while highlighting local culture, food, and entertainment. In addition to traditional livestock shows and agricultural displays, a wide variety of attractions including concerts, carnival rides, contests (such as pie-eating and pumpkin-growing), and exhibitions fill the fairgrounds. One of the fair’s most popular events is the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off, where pumpkins weighing over 2,000 pounds can be seen. The fair also hosts 4-H exhibits and youth competitions in farming skills.
The Topsfield Fair is a beloved local tradition, remaining true to its roots while embracing modern changes, making it a cherished annual event for locals and visitors alike. Throughout its lengthy history, the fair has only been canceled three times: in 1918 because of the Spanish Flu, 1943-1945 because of WWII, and 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its long history reflects the evolving nature of agriculture and rural life in Massachusetts, and it continues to be a celebration of community, history, and tradition.
